Medical Assistant Training
Make Your Choice Early!
If you know the school you want to attend you
may have the option of applying early and getting a response
in the fall rather than by next spring. Be careful, because
early applications are not always first-come, first-served,
but it won't hurt to take the time to fill out your
applications sooner, rather than last minute.

What is Taught in Medical
Assisting School?
Prospective medical assistant students must realize that in
this career mastery of clinical tasks with proper technique and
controls are essential. Ideally it should take place in a
traditional classroom where students can focus on interactive
learning, feedback, and criticism under the watchful eye of an
experienced instructor. Hands-on training is essential to
learning the skills needed as a medical assistant.
Distance Education vs. Hands-On Training
Distance education programs emphasize learning theory over
practical skills, which is fine as long as the individual has
clearly defined learning goals. eLearners.com recommends:
"Knowing something about a school's
accreditation can tell you a
lot about the value of the degree or course for which you
are paying". Understanding accreditation can also help you
identify and avoid "diploma mills", i.e. non-accredited
institutions that grant degrees without ensuring that
students are properly qualified.
It is important to understant that certain medical assisting
skills such as taking vital signs, drawing up injections,
administering ear lavage or instilling drops, collecting
specimens, preparing slides, setting up EKGs, incubating
Petri-dishes, sterilizing instruments, changing wound dressings
and wrapping bandages are best learned in medical assistant
class under the direct guidance of an experienced clinical
instructor. The direct
supervision and hands-on practice in a safe, supervised setting
assures that the student will be competent and well prepared
for the REAL job.
Specialty Training Requirements...
Certain states mandate that medical assistants take a test
or a course before they can perform certain tasks, such as
x-rays, ultra sound treatments, or performing venipunctures. It
is highly recommended that individuals seeking medical
assistant training sign up for programs to earn the right
diplomas and credentials.
Military Members and their Dependents
Military members receive financial benefits under the GI
bill and other programs. Their spouses and dependents can
receive money for education and training through the Dependents
Education Assistance (DEA) program. (Source: Military.com, the

and those considering a military career.)
Sadly, there still are countless medical assistants that have put off getting certified. Don't make the same mistake! Take charge and get your credentials.
Accreditation doesn't automatically mean that learners will qualify for state or national certification upon completing the course. Be an informed consumer...
