Certified medical assistants are serious about their career and true go-getters. They stay
focused and on track to land better jobs to reach their full potential. Many eventually become medical assistant
instructors at well respected vocational training institutions and community colleges, or specialize in interesting
specialty fields such as forensics as a medical examiner assistant, go into cardiology, pediatrics,
geriatrics, oncology, urology, endocrinology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, hematology, or kidney dialysis. Others
use their experience and return to school to earn a degree in the art of skilled technologist or nursing

A dedicated healthcare professional, Rose M. Rivera is best noted for her expertise in medical assisting and
coding. She recently embarked on a second career as a teacher. Now an adjunct faculty member at LCCC, she
works with students in the medical laboratory and assists them with checking vital signs and conducting blood
tests.
She also works for Erie Coast Chest Physicians, where she deals with patients and prepares medical histories. A
factory worker for 32 years, Ms. Rivera found her calling after she found inspiration through a mentor who
persuaded her to assist in a grant program. In 2007 Ms. Rivera obtained an associate degree of science in
medical assisting, with a concentration in clinical studies, an associate of science in medical assisting,
with a concentration in administrative studies in 2006, and an associate of arts in business in 1981. She is also a
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) and a certified phlebotomist. Looking ahead, she aspires to become a
full-time faculty instructor in pharmacology, medical coding and medical assisting.
