If you know the medical assistant vocational training school you want to attend you may have the option of
applying early to get a response in the fall rather than the following spring. But realize that early school
applications are not always first-come, first-served, and it won't hurt to take the time to fill out your
application sooner, rather than later.

What Medical Assisting Schools Teach
Ideally medical assistant training should take place in a traditional classroom where students can focus on
interactive learning, feedback, and criticism under the watchful eye of an experienced instructor.
Typical medical assistant learning modules are organized into three sections:
* general and/or transdisciplinary
* administrative
* clinical
Hands-on training is essential to learning the skills needed as a medical assistant. As the medical assistant
works, their skills will grow, and there will always be opportunities to learn more.
Distance Education vs. Hands-On Training
Distance education programs emphasize learning theory over practical skills, which is fine as long as the
individual has clearly defined learning goals. eLearners.com recommends: "Knowing something about a school's accreditation can tell you a lot about the value of the degree or course for
which you are paying".Understanding accreditation can also
help you identify and avoid "diploma mills", i.e. non-accredited institutions that grant degrees without
ensuring that students are properly qualified.
Specialty Training Requirements
Certain states mandate that medical assistants take a test or a course before they can perform certain tasks,
such as starting IV lines, taking x-rays, administering ultra sound treatments, or performing venipuncture. It is
highly recommended that individuals seeking medical assistant training sign up for programs to earn the right
diplomas and credentials.
Military Members and their Dependents
Military members receive financial benefits under the GI bill and other programs. Their spouses and dependents
can receive money for education and training through the Dependents Education Assistance (DEA) program. (Source:
